I Lost Years of Work Because I Didn’t Document It Link to heading

It has been 3 to 4 days since I started posting on LinkedIn, and I am realizing something very late: I have lost track of a lot of the work I did at my previous companies. Around 6 years of work.

There were UI features that I solely built. Features I was really proud of because I worked hard on them. But once you leave a company, those contributions stay private. Now I don’t have any proof.

Totally blanked out Link to heading

While writing posts, I tried recalling what I had done in my previous companies, and guess what? Totally blanked out. :)

Documenting things for yourself and revisiting those notes later can really help, especially when someone scans your resume and asks questions like:

  • What projects did you work on?
  • What was the most exciting thing you worked on?
  • What challenges did you face?
  • How did you tackle those challenges?
  • How did you manage conflicts with team members or your manager?
  • What were your biggest failures and learnings?

The sad part is that I don’t have most of it documented. What I do know is only in my brain, and it has become very vague now.

Thanks to the community members and all the LinkedIn connections whose posts inspired me to start documenting my own journey.

So I am making a pinky promise to myself: document as much as I can, even if I never post it. Keep it in my git vault for future reference.

Keep adding notes. Notes. And more notes.
